- September 8 is International Literacy Day. UNESCO, Microsoft and the Verizon Foundation are launching the Knowledge and Innovations Network for Literacy to connect literacy researchers and practitioners all over the world. UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova called for more attention to be paid to literacy for girls. There are 796 million illiterate adults around the world.
